Saturday 10 June Puzzle – Focus on CLOVERLEAF

Set up 1 – from a Zero line: Slide thru, pass thru, outsides ½ sashay (bottom photo)

Set up 2 – From a Zero Box: slide thru, square thru 2, centres 1/2 sashay, left touch 1/4 and Box circulate once (top photo)

The resolution must have at least one cloverleaf in it. Objective: Develop your known resolution modules with a cloverleaf theme from a Zero Box and Zero Line.

Rick Hampton Centers W+Dodge others partner trade- Cloverleaf, DPT First cpl go Right, Next Go Right and wrong way promenade home (not that many floors would do that LOL)

Mel Wilkerson I have no trouble with the go right, go right but doesn't the cloverleaf in your set up separate thehead couples so that after the double pass thru they are promenading with the head ladis crossed?

Rick Hampton well there is that, I was setting up a dixie grand but remembered MS all at 3am

Rick Hampton OK Centers Walk and Dodge and Clover leaf,The others back up, Pass to the center, DPT Leads Cloverleaf others part trade L allemande (or Sq 3 to home

Mel Wilkerson at 3AM..and you are discussing checkers and dancers...You must be a square dance caller...LOL

Mel Wilkerson Rick Hampton you know all those square dance sounds like the swoosh on the slide thrus and hoot hoot on track two (or BBBBBBRRRRROOOOOOOPPPP if the train is diesel electric)...we should get "BEEP BEEP BEEP" for all those back up movements we use...LOL

Aahz Caller Mel Wilkerson Er, we often do that (BEEP BEEP BEEP on backup). At least around here, San Francisco area, if the resolve leaves the dancers less than a quarter counter-clockwise from home. I've done that in other areas, too, but it doesn't seem quite as common.

Mel Wilkerson Aahz Caller I wasn't thinking about the back up fix on a quarter out on resolution...more about actually backing up...like on the movement substitute or a little gimmick like sides california twirl , heads pas thru annd cloverleaf..back up sides..(beep beep beep)....or something like that...but both could work...

Rick Hampton Get your asses outta there too harse ? 😀

Lee Meador The top one: center girls run and the centers cloverleaf. Pass to the center. Square thru 3. LA and you're home.

Lee Meador You can't do this one on SD. When I type "center girls run" they run right. But it won't let me say "center girls run left". Usually I can find a work around for SD's eccentricities.

Lee Meador And this one doesn't work. After the cloverleaf everyone is with partners in boxes and sides are on the outside.

Lee Meador Bottom one: centers pass thru. Everyone cloverleaf. When you meet box the gnat. Drop hands. Boys zoom. Double pass thru. First couple go left. Next couple go left. Promenade. Not so sure. I lose the image with a cloverleaf. I should sd it but I think by making myself do these in my head, it develops an important mental skill. Thanks Mel

Mel Wilkerson Change that boys zoom to a girls zoom and the soulution is solid...if you are doing that in your head you are doing fantastic....you could also go first left next right and you have a zero line module complete from start to finish...well done Lee.

Lee Meador After girls zoom you could also do: swing thru. Turn thru. LA. One of the patterns I've learned to see is: everyone with partner. DPT formation. Boy on the front can see his corner over his right shoulder. Then the above works. Based on this, I think I can add a new resolution from there: DPT. 1 left. 2 left. Promenade. ...See More

Lee Meador The get in for the bottom one is: 1: SIDES lead right 2: circle to a line 3: slide thru...See More

Lee Meador When you say "zero line" does it imply whether the heads are on the left end of the line or the right end?

Aahz Caller Without looking at the comments, here are my solutions:

setup 1
ends cloverleaf
CENTERS spin the top
extend
boys run
ferris wheel
CENTERS slide thru (home!)

setup 2
ends separate and star thru
center girls run
cloverleaf
CENTERS pass thru
swing thru
right and left grand

Mel Wilkerson both are very nice and flow well good solutions.

Misako Salais Sorry, accidentally touched the wrong key, again. Set up 1: Ends Cloverleaf, Centers Partner Trade- -Cloverleaf, Zoon, Centers-UTurn Back , Right and Left Grand

Mel Wilkerson very nice.....use the word AND Cloverleaf after the centres partner trade. That is not a fix. there is nothing wrong with what you have. It is just a bit of phrasing to make it easier on the dancers...that way they know that he ones that trade are active and the othes are not doing a cloverleaf so they canstep in and wait a second for the others.

very nice.

Misako Salais Thanks, Mr. Wilkerson, I'll use AND. Actually, I need to tell the dancers whatever is needed to clarify the sutuation in Japanese. Wow, there are so many things I should learn, so many factors to take into consideration to call. Love and best wishes to all of you, great callers from Osaka, Japan!

Mel Wilkerson Thank you very much. I stated earlier that the soutions work very well. Generally I do not make comments on filler words. When you said you were a brand new caller, I thought I would mention a couple of things to make it easier for you when you pres...See More

Misako Salais Sorry! My get-out, again; each side Walk and Dodge, Ends-Circulate, Centers Lead Right, All Allemande Left.

Aahz Caller Nice! I'd be inclined to make it a little easier by inserting "Centers Face" before the Allemande.

I personally wouldn't call this because the traffic flow in the center is suboptimal, similar to the issue with Wheel & Deal from facing lines.

Mel Wilkerson Misako, if I read that correctly each sde, boy walk girl dodge, (takes me to facng couples n the middle, 4 man facing 1 lady and 2 man facing 3 lady, and the ends are facing out..1 man and 2 lady on the far side and 4 lady and 3 man on the near side...See More

Misako Salais Thank you so much for your coments, Mr. Aahz Caller and Mr. Mel Wilkerson. Honestly, I am at a loss what to do in order to learn to call. Hard to find good textbooks in Japan. So I just go online looking for whatever I can find and read. I am loving the Newbie Callers site. Always so so inspiring! Thanks again!

Saturday 17 June weekly puzzle: This one is on request:

You must use a LEFT HANDED SCOOT back in the solution.

Example solutions may be: (h) Lead Right, (the get in to the picture) Circle to a Line, Forward & Back, Pass Thru, Girls Run, Scoot Back, Girls Run, Slide Thru, Pass Thru, Allemande left

(H) Touch ¼, (the get in to the picture) Boys Run, Left Touch ¼, Scoot Back - left hand girls, Girls Run, Pass The Ocean, Swing Thru, Recycle, allemande left

The request and comment was: Is it necessary to say “Left” for movements that have not options like spin the top, scoot back, recycle etc. if that is your only option. Can you put something up that shows why?

The answer is SOMETIMES. Is it necessary? In some cases there are no options such as spin the top from left hand waves, or recycle, and other times it is required to state it for clarification.

If I look at for instance, a standard left hand wave get-out using recycle, - (from a Zero Line) Right & Left Thru, Dixie Style to a Wav, RECYCLE (L-H Wave, Boys in Centre), Square Thru 3, Allemande left – I may not say “left recycle” but I would say recycle “it’s a lefty” or some such clue.

If I do a movement like spin the top from a left hand wave, I probably would say “Left” spin the top. Although there is no option it not only clarifies the move for the dancers but can add that “feel“ of complexity that is not really there and the dancers succeed.

Many movements like swing thru, MUST be clarified left if it is a “left swing thru” due to definition requirements. Others like scoot back do not. However, remember, if you give the dancers choices on what to do it is an invariable coincidence that some will always choose the one you do not want.

In simple terms, if it helps the dancers succeed; then let them succeed.

Resolution puzzle for Saturday 03 JUNE 2017 Rules: 1. Basic and mainstream only. 2. Must use at least 1 Walk and Dodge in the solution

Simple set up: (H)Circle left 3/4, Boy Walk-Girl Dodge, those who can touch ¼

Sample solution Boy walk-girl dodge, ends cross fold, boy walk-girl dodge, hinge, extend box the gnat right and left grand

Mel Wilkerson Sorry had to delete the first posting and re-do the pictues..I was having problems with number 3 man...he was going where I put him instead of where I wanted him to be...even in the second photo he is stepping on his partner's heels...I bet he gets a stern talking to when he gets home......LOL My checkers are almost like real dancers......Good catch on the first posting Glenn Wilson....I missed it completely.

Dan Lyke Top solution: Girls walk, boys dodge, scoot back, boys run, right and left grand.

Bottom solution: Centers walk and dodge, see above.

Mel Wilkerson Holy Scoot back workshop Batman..LOL...good flow and transition use....at basic and mainstream I would likely vary that diagonal pull by to soemthing like a

split circulate once, boys run - RLG...See More

Lee Meador Top: box the gnat. Step to a wave. Boys in the center scootback with the left. Swing thru. Girls in the center scootback with the left. Box the gnat with your partner. R&L grand. Promenade. But is the girls left trade followed by scootback left too many lefts in a row?

Lee Meador Bottom. Center 4 walk and dodge. Step to a wave. Center 4 scootback. Boys run. Slide thru. Pass thru. Left allenande.

Mel Wilkerson one of the biggest variations that occurs for dancing is "just the centres scoot back" rather than centres trade....the same occurs with Scoot back, centres trade, rather than swing thru.

The power in this variation is when you do things like an isolated extemporaneous sight calling (working with a two couple snapshot)...it is an interractive that can invovle the entire square without breaking up the two couples and it is not as obvious as ferris wheel , pass thru, or 8 chain 4

heads square thru (2 couples together) dance dance dance dance dance dance snapshot allemande left - no interraction with the other 2 coupels

with an interraciive

heads square thru (2 couples together), dance dance (interractive scoot back across the square - oh look there are more dancers than just our two couples)...back to two couples , dance dance (interractive 8 chain 4) -wow we mixed everyone up and we are on the other side now (caller sees same two couples)..dance dance, interrctive scoot back, boys run ferris wheel (interraactive) pass thru allemande left...

Now it feels like a really interractive dance, working with all 8 dancers but in reality the newer caller is still working on two couple calling

It is a powerful tool to learn and one of the reasons for this little puzzle.

Aahz Caller Nice! I'd be inclined to make it a little easier by inserting "Centers Face" before the Allemande.

I personally wouldn't call this because the traffic flow in the center is suboptimal, similar to the issue with Wheel & Deal from facing lines.

Di Green Mel Wilkerson this is great! I’m supposed to be working so not read it all yet but I was going to mention diamonds. No need now you’ve covered it. 👍

What’s your view on the two dancer cloverleaf and spread? I just posted to Glenn after reading definitions again. Think we need to consider SPREAD definition to clarify? Like · React · More · 7 hours ago Mel Wilkerson I was typing and your response just came up. Jaden is technically correct on that however, I do not think a prompt the first time is out of order especially for newer plus dancers. Jaden is a really good caller and he gives his dancers every opportunity to succeed - even with some funky material so he likely does that anyway.

Most callers do it is just that when we post here, we tend to forget that not all callers include prompts and indices when they write the choreo….I think your comment was right on the mark Like · React · More · 7 hours ago Di Green Mel Wilkerson thanks for confirmation. It’s easy to forget exact wording of definitions and use ones own interpreted meaning. Im aware of that and that’s why I often re-read definitions. When someone has a query like this it is a good exercise to clarify what the written word says and means and how sometimes more than one definition can affect the overall interpretation and end result. This group is a great platform for this type of discussion and sharing views. 👍 Like · React · More · 6 hours ago

Michael Kellogg Right hand waves, boys facing in. Swing Thru, Roll = normal couples in a starting double pass thr

Michael Kellogg Normal couples in a starting double pass thru is a convenient ending for Rolls that are out of the ordinary for a given floor because you don't have to tell them where they end up. When you follow it with double pass through, anybody facing the wrong way will turn around without prompting. Also, anybody that is lost will tend toward normal couples before joining with anyone else.

Michael Kellogg Corner box. Touch 1/4, Centers Trade, Trade the Wave, Roll = also gives normal couples in a starting double pass thru.

Lady’s chain 3/4 heads square thru slide thru roll and weave the ring

Me riffing on Load The Boat and modules

Load The Boat is (from 0 arrangement lines) a Slide Thru equivalent. 2 Slide Thrus is a Right And Left Thru equivalent. So Slide Thru (or an equivalent), Right and Left Thru (or an equivalent), Load The Boat is a box zero (with a geographic 180 rotation).

Example equivalent for Slide Thru: Swing Thru, Spin The Top, Step Thru, Partner Trade.

Example equivalent for Right and Left Thru: Reverse Flutterwheel, Flutterwheel.

So Swing Thru, Spin the Top, Step Thru, Partner Trade, Reverse Flutterwheel, Flutterwheel, Load The Boat is a zero.

So is Swing Thru, Spin the Top, Right and Left Thru, Flutterwheel, Reverse Flutterwheel, Load The Boat.

But if you've been working on your rhythm with singing call figures, you probably also already memorized a whole ton modules that you didn't know you memorized. So my basic notion of a module is "rotate a box 90 degrees counter-clockwise". Any of those plus a Ladies Chain equivalent puts you one Load The Boat shy of a zero, so:

  • Touch 1/4, Walk and Dodge, Partner Trade
  • Touch 1/4, Split Circulate, Boys Run
  • Pass the Ocean, Recycle
  • Swing Thru, Boys Run, Bend the Line
  • oh, look, that's "Right and Left Thru, Veer Left, Bend the Line" equivalent.
  • it's also Single Circle to a Wave, Boys Trade, Boys Run, Bend the Line equivalent.

So after any of those we can throw in a Reverse Flutterwheel or Ladies Chain (depending on flow, all of those like a Reverse Flutterwheel) and be ready to Load The Boat to a zero.

But wait, there's more! With that Bend the Line followed by a Reverse Flutterwheel, what if we traded the Ladies at the beginning?

Like Girls Trade, Bend the Line... Or Chain Down the Line...
